Trauma as a natural process

Using the body as a pathway to therapeutic resolution and integration

This one day workshop is facilitated by Mark Bottrill, Darren Bottrill, and Dena Marshall. It is highly interactive, where participation in body-based exercises is required. those with heart conditions are advised to talk to us first before attending this workshop.

Brief Overview

Drawing on our many years of experience in both Martial Arts and psychotherapy, we propose that the disciplines within Karate have many insights to support psychotherapists working with traumatised clients. We explore the links between Attachment theory and physiological, psychomotor responses, and introduce simple Martial Arts techniques to support how the inclusion of a body-based treatment plan can help to resolve traumatic experiences.

CPD Outline

The Traumatic response has been a much debated issue in recent years. The aim of this workshop is to approach the traumatic response as a natural process and establish a difference between this, and the psychopathological diagnosis and treatment within the medical model.

We will be drawing on the work done by Siegal, Schore, Porges, Ogden, Pain, Minton, Bowlby and others, integrating elements of their observations with practical psychomotor exercises based in the Martial Arts, promoting empowerment of the client to re-integrate parts of their bodily responses that may have fragmented during traumatic experiences and events in their past.

Participants are encouraged to do what they will ask of their clients, in the form of bodily movements. So we recommend that loose clothing and comfortable footwear be worn for this workshop. Please note that the exercises are not obligatory and the exercises themselves do not involve major physical exertion.

Our workshops are either held at our premises or at the Merlin Centre in St Austell. When held at our premises the groups are small, friendly, and intimate (with up to 9 participants). Refreshments and ‘nibbles’ (teas, REAL coffee, juices and biscuits) are provided throughout the day, however lunch is not provided (we do have a microwave and toaster available). Socks, slippers, soft soles and bare pinkies are welcome, hard or high heels are not. Our training space is extremely comfy, warm and homely (and rather colourful).

A 6 hour CPD is provided at the end of the workshop.

ABOUT DENA AND MARK

We are partners in both life and work, and have been practicing clinical psychotherapy and counselling in Cornwall since 1999, individually and as co-therapists with couples and groups. We are also both qualified and experienced martial artist instructors (traditional karate), where the bringing together of mind, body and spirit (otherwise known as ‘the martial way’ or ‘way of life’) promotes harmony, knowledge, integrity, respect, and courage.

We both have a variety of experience spanning over many years in working with adults and children, individually, within groups, and within a residential setting, covering a wide range of issues: examples include past and present physical, sexual and mental abuse, mental health issues, addictions, anxiety, self-harm, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Autism, Asperger Syndrome, Tourette’s Syndrome, physical disability, phobias, mood disorders and depression, eating disorders and personality disorders.

We are passionate about life and nature, and we like to have fun and enjoy our life.
